AVM Rajeswari entered their maiden final in the Chennai leg of the Junior Super Kings Inter-school T20 Championships and will take on last year’s runners-up Don Bosco (Egmore) for the crown at the IC-Guru Nanak College ground on Saturday (1 p.m. start) in The Muthoot Group-sponsored fourth edition.
AVM defeated PSBB Millennium by seven wickets in the opening semifinal at the IC-Guru Nanak College on Friday while Don Bosco beat Nellai Nadar MHSS by 10 wickets in the other clash.
Captain Ram Arvindh turned in a second Man of the match performance in three days to guide AVM to victory. The all-rounder took three wickets with his off-spin, effected an impressive direct hit to run out PSBB left-hander Vikram Sathish for 34 and then hit 44 as the side achieved the target in 14.4 overs.
“We required a good start given that PSBB defended 123 against defending champions St Bede’s yesterday,” said Arvindh. “Of course, bowling them out for 100 made a big difference,” added Arvindh, who put on 71 for the second wicket with A Mahesh.
PSBB lost three early wickets after opting to bat and their last four wickets for the addition of only eight runs after Vikram’s dismissal. Medium-pacer R Sri Hari bowled impressively for his 2-20.
Nellai Nadar’s batting was derailed by five run outs including that of S Harish, who scored a century in the quarterfinals, to be restricted to 96/9.
Promising ’keeper-batsman S Ganesh (50) and left-hander V Abishek (43) took the side home comfortably. Abishek hit five sixes, three in one over off left-arm spinner Govind Sharma.
“All credit to our bowlers who did a great job,” said Ganesh. “No St Bede’s in the final this time. However, a final is a final and we need to be disciplined,” he added.
B Balasubramani, CEO, Guru Nanak College, and Dr A Jeyaganesan, the college’s Director of Physical Education, inaugurated the first and second matches respectively.
